Owning a home is a lot of work. There is a lot to do with its upkeep, even when everything is working correctly. But if you encounter a problem; such as a water leak, it can be very frustrating, very damaging, and if not caught quickly, it can be very costly.

Do you know what and where to look for the source of a leak? Here are some tips you should know, so you can find a leak quickly and help prevent expensive damage. You can be an active role in the home plumbing of your house.

Shut the Main Valve

If you suspect a leak; first, locate, and shut off the main water valve outside your home. Once you do, watch the meter for a few minutes. If your water valve is off and the meter is still turning, you probably have a leak.

Begin Investigation

Start with the inside of the home. Make sure no water appliances have been left on, or are running. Check all faucets, sinks, bathtubs and toilets. Be sure you don’t see a leak coming from any on/off valve.

You can start with investigating your toilet. One home plumbing tip is to add a little food coloring to the tank. After a few minutes, if the toilet leaks, you’ll see the coloring emerge from the toilet and onto the floor.

Some leaks will be noticeable. Others are hard to detect; small or hidden. For less obvious leaks, you’ll have to investigate deeper. Check water supply lines on appliances, floors where water-using appliances sit, and look for bulging floor boards or stains.

Replace Regularly

Any appliance or water-using device that uses washers, should have the washers replaced regularly. They can become old, dried out, and begin to leak. Check for soft spots on walls, look for signs of water damage regularly, around areas and appliances where water-using appliances are, on a regular basis. Never ignore water drips, or water stains on walls or floors.

Even small leaks can add up to big bucks and extensive damage. The sooner you can detect the leak and get it repaired, the better. Being attentive, and not overlooking signs of a water leak are key. The sooner you notice a leak and take action, the less chance you have of developing a more serious issues and less damage.
