We can all do our part to conserve water. Follow these tips to contribute to water conservation and green plumbing.
- Use biodegradable soaps and laundry detergents
- Use adequate amounts of detergents and do not go overboard. Do not use harsh chemicals and bleach that may kill natural bacteria in your septic system.
- Prevent excessive watering of your lawn during the summer months by purchasing an inexpensive spring-loaded timer that attaches directly to your outside faucet. This will prevent excessive watering if you forget to turn the outside sprinkler off.
- Check your water meter during a period of time when you are not using any water. Write down the meter reading and check it 10 hours later. If the meter reading has moved, there is probably an undetected water leak. Call Mike Wilson Plumbing at 804.641.6570 to have this checked immediately.
- If your home’s water pressure is above 60 pounds per square inch this could be harmful to your plumbing system and cause increased water usage. Contact your water authority to find out what the water pressure is on your street. If it is over 60 pounds, consider installing a pressure-reducing valve that will limit the pressure in your home.
- Check the temperature on your water heater. It should not be above 120 degrees or medium on older models. This will reduce your home’s energy usage.
- If you have a leaky faucet and it drips once per second, it can waste eight gallons of water per day. That is 3,000 gallons per year. Call us immediately to have this issue resolved.
- Having a leaky toilet can consume 40% of your total water usage in your home. Installing a new toilet flapper and valve will keep your water usage down and your toilet running correctly.
