There are many things that take place around the house that we can take for granted, some might be ignored; others should be monitored regularly. As homeowners, some of us believe in the DIY process, an option that could easily come back to haunt us if we are not careful. Plumbing is one of those tasks that require a certain amount of knowledge, so before your spouse decides for DIY plumbing that he should dive in, maybe he should consider a few important factors.
Knowledge is Power
When it comes to home plumbing, emergency situations can be stressful, especially if they turn out to be costly. Rather than wait until the damage has occurred or gotten so bad that your life is being disrupted, there are things that you can handle on your own. Preventative maintenance will not be required, but knowing that a problem may occur later might improve your chances of having to deal with an emergency. Once or twice a month, in between plumbing inspections, your spouse should check the pipes for leakage.
Protecting Yourself
When your spouse grabs their tools, and he is asked why, unless there is a history there, you will get a straight answer. If there is a leak somewhere, and he is attempting to fix it on his own, you might want to contact your neighborhood plumber before he removes his first fitting. There is always some level of risk when someone takes on a project, which is why a reputable plumber has insurance. If something goes wrong when your spouse is handling the job, your homeowner’s insurance will not cover it.
The Second Time
When the plumber is called out to fix the toilet, or replace the water heater, that job is secure. The homeowner will not have to get involved in it again, in fact, if anything remotely related to the problem looks like it will affect anything, the plumber will usually fix it right there. When your spouse grabs his tools, if he is lucky enough to solve the problem, he is through. He will not look any further and if the issue was not efficiently handled, he will have to return; maybe he will not be as fortunate the second time around.
