Main Sewer Line

If the toilet is on the ground floor, run water from a higher fixture like a tub or sink on the second floor.Watch the toilet bowl for air bubbling or turbulence to see if the water line appears to be getting higher. If you notice either of these, your main sewer line may have an obstruction. It is highly recommended that you do NOT wait around in hopes that the toilet will start flushing normally again. Slow-running sewer lines normally get worse with use and waiting usually means sewage is backing up in the basement or the lowest point of drainage in your house. A residential plumber will be needed to unclog the sewer lines and resolve the issue sooner rather than later.

Back Tank

One of the first things to check is the back tank of the toilet. Ensure the reservoir tank is filling completely with each flush. Mineral build-up can occur in your tank causing the float to close prematurely. Cleaning the tank or replacing a part should resolve the problem if this is the cause.

Clogging

Often times a slow-flushing toilet is what is the material leaving the as opposed to the condition of the back of your tank.  When you notice the drain is clogged, reach for your plunger. If using the plunger properly, a drain should be unclogged within a minute or two.  If the clog doesn’t clear, a professional plumber should be called. A plumber will be able to use a snake auger to clear the clog or remove part of the drain. Homeowners should keep in mind that iron pipes have the potential for problems as they age so they should be inspected on a regular basis and be replaced if necessary.
